I am a postdoctoral researcher specialised in biomedical ethics and health law. In my academic career, I have focussed primarily on investigating the relationship between law, ethics and biomedical technologies, as well as on the impact of legislation on the organization of the healthcare system and biomedical research.
Education
In have a Master’s degree (First-Class Honours with distinction) in European and Transnational Comparative Law from the University of Trento (Italy). As part of this degree, I gained international experience by studying at the School of Law of the University of Reading (UK) for three terms and at the Faculty of Law and the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Law of the KU Leuven (BE) for one semester. I then obtained a PhD in Biomedical Ethics from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Basel (summa cum laude). I also have followed the Postgraduate Advanced Course “Law and scientific evaluations” by the Department of Law of the University of Milan (Italy).
Research
My research has been covering different topics at the intersection between law, ethics and biomedical technologies, including:
– data protection law in the healthcare and biomedical research domains – health data governance and data sharing practices – intergenerational justice in caring arrangements – allocation of resources in public health emergencies – fair access to assistive technologies – regulation of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) – Right to Try and legal pathways to access experimental treatments
Beyond academia
Although being primarily a researcher, I have always been passionate about getting involved with activities beyond the strictly academic ones. For example, I have been an active member of the Swiss EHCL community and thus participated in dialogues with policymakers and other healthcare stakeholders on how to steer the evolution of Swiss healthcare. I have also collaborated with the MLFPM as an ethics and data protection advisor for their research activities. More recently, I have been involved in a working group synthesising lessons learned and future policy recommendations for long-term care in Switzerland after the pandemic.
